The Blues Dominate at Ovalfest

Another meeting and yet another blue grade washout as the red tops once again failed to find the chequered flag at Nuttscorner oval on Bank Holiday Monday. This meeting was part of the MayDay Ovalfest which was run by OvalRacingNI, an amalgamation of all 3 top Ulster promotions. The three races in actual fact fell to drivers who have dropped to the blues after the recent regrading, and Dungannon's Davy Clarke it was who got the ball rolling with a fine win in heat one, with former British Champion Garry Campbell chasing him home in second. Campbell was again the runner-up in heat two, this time behind fellow former British Champ Wayne McClure, as he steered his pretty Saxo to the chequers. Come the final, we were down in numbers following a few skirmishes during the heats as the racing continues to be ridiculously close. Derek Martin had earlier left the arena on the back of the breakdown, but the youngster was back on form to claim the magnificent Ovalfest trophy for the feature race winner. Campbell was again the bridesmaid for the third time in one afternoon, with National Hot Rod star man Mark Heatrick having his best run to date in the 2 Litres in third.

Reed takes First Title to become English Champion!

Wimbledon, 2nd May Heat 1 Start Grid- Drawn out of the hat 1.110 2.566 3.10 4.565 5.300 6.175 7.304 8.209 9.146 10.60 As the green flag was dropped, carnage on the first corner resulted in many cars spinning and a full restart being forced. Richard Poulter in car 175, Chris Crane in 75, 38 Mark constable, and car 82 Paul Jones were all disqualified for continuing to race under the red flags, and were not allowed to re join. So once again to green flag came down, and Jason Wilkes in 110 got a good start to lead, while 209 Weaver had come through the pack in to second, with a chasing Paffey in car 60, and Reed in 306 on his heels. As the gap increased between the 110 car and the rest of the pack so a blown head gasket forced a retirement from the leader, leaving Weaver to take up the lead. Weaver took the chequered flag, but a black cross promoted Paffey to take the race win. As the top two cars started to pull away from the pack, Jowers could not seem to find a way round Wright. William Reed in Car 306 had worked hard from the middle of the pack to get up to sixth position and was dicing with Cooper in car 308. As the chequered flag came out so Wright took the win followed by Jowers and Chris Crane in car 75. As the race started 306 got a great start with Wright getting straight in to second, and Paffey taking a wider line than expected. Cooper and Jowers were dicing for third, with Cooper taking Jowers, and then Jowers returning the move the next lap. An incident involving Danny Fiske in car 304, and Paffey resulted in Fiske being spun on the infield. The saxo of Poulter car 175 pulled off in to the infield as well as Paffey. As Reed continued to lead and Wright continued to chase, the laps were ticking away. As Mr starter waved the chequered flag Reed took his first title in the 2 litres to become English champion. McDowell Takes Nuttscorner Final

With a bumper crowd on hand, said by many to be a record for the circuit, for the big Shamwreck National Banger event, the 2 Litre Hot Rods had a marvelous stage to show their class at Nuttscorner Oval on Sunday April 25th. 25 cars were on hand for this one, and once again the star graders failed to win a race. Philip Beatty steered his Nova to a fine win in heat one from John Murray, before the popular Leigh Nicholl led home David McMenemy in heat two. Former Irish Champion Glenn McDowell had been knocking on the door all day with a couple of thirds in the heats, and he made it count in the final with a commanding victory over McMenemy and Beatty, with Shane Murray top star man in fourth.

Down takes Northampton Final

With a vast grid of cars a 2/3rds grid made up the running order for the 2 litres on sunday. A grey and dull start to the day ment that many expected rain, but it manage to hold off all day to stay bright. Heat 1 Start Graded Order As the cars lined up on the grid 162 Paul Trimmer tried hard to clear a mis-fire but was unsuccessful and had to pull off, unable to start the race. Car 6 Graham Fulker was lucky not to pick up any damage as the flags went green, and his car was powerless, he managed to roll it into the infield as the rest of the pack came through. 565 and 108 diced for the lead with 565 getting through to race the last few laps to victory. 96 Kevin Randell was black flagged for persistent contact. 1. 565 (Dan Smith) 2.108 (Kevin Down) 3.30 (Martin Codling) 4.412 (Mark Peck) 5.306 (Will Reed) 6.50 (Jamie White) 7.566 (Marc Crome) 8.110 (Jason Wilkes) 9.75 (Chris Crane) 10.43 ( Paul Wright) Heat 2 Start Graded Order A dramatic start saw 38 Mark Constable's wheel come flying off resulting in a spin for Mark Peck. A full restart for a further 4 laps and 543 Tommy Miller hit the wall and the race was back to waved yellows. 151 led from the yellows with 108 behind, many incidents involving 151 resulting in him being black flagged for erractic driving leaving 87 to come through to victory 1.87 (Jason Busby) 2.412 (Mark Peck) 3.306 (Will Reed) 4.108 (Kevin Down) 5.60 (Mark Paffey) 6.96 ( Kevin Randell) 7.56 Mark Freeman) 8.43 (Paul Wright) 9.209 (Kym Weaver) 10.175 (Chris Crane) Heat 3 Start Graded Order 151 led from the green flags but after putting down oil on the track he had to retire and waved yellows were out while they cleared the oil. 175 Richard Poulter led the pack in his new saxo first outing, and was unchalleged for the rest of the race to take the win in his new car. 1.175 (Richard Poulter) 2.8 (Damo Wellman) 3.87 (Jason Busby) 4.60 (Mark Paffey) 5.75 (Chris Crane) 6.565 (Dan Smith) 7.566 (Marc Crome) 8.204 (Carl Pye) 9.310 (Sean o'Leary) 10.50 (Jamie White) Final Start Graded Order 25 cars started the final, a big crash 2 laps in involving 50 Jamie White and 87 Jason Busby, ment that Jamies car was dragged to the infield, with 110 Jason Wilkes retiring too. 175 Poulter and 565 Dan Smith were disqualified from the race for what the stewards felt was their part in the mass pile up on turn 2, and were unable to take part in the rest of the race. As the race then continued minus those cars, another incident saw 87 Busby and 162 Trimmer come together, with Busby pushing trimmer the length of the straight side ways. 108 then led from the yellows with a fast Paffey and Wright coming through the pack quickly from almost the last cars on the grid. Cooper Takes East Anglian Championship !!

A warm breezy Ipswich set the scene for the 2 litre Hot Rod East Anglian Chanmpionship on Saturday evening. A random grid draw for heat 1 and then a reverse grid for heat 2 set for a goods nights racing. Heat 1 Grid 1.306 2.566 3.10 4.39 5.43 6.6 Finish 1.306 2.43 3.308 4.75 5.39 6.60 William Reed led from start to finish in his orange Haird corsa, with Cooper hot on the heels of Wright in second. A great battle for second resulted in Wright just keeping the edge over Cooper to take second position with Cooper in third. Heat 2 Finish 1.146 2.82 3.565 4.22 5.56 565 came through to take a well earned third, with 146 taking a great win. A quick Mark Paffey in car 60 was coming through the cars, until a flat battery put paid to his rapid chase. Final Grid 1.75 2.308 3.146 4.43 5.110 6.565 Finish 1.308 2.75 3.110 4.43 5.306 An excellent final, many quoted 'the best race of the night!' Cooper took Crane off the line going straight in to the lead, leaving Wright and Crane to battle it out for second for the next few laps. Crane got the edge and Wright and Wilkes started the battle for third! This battle continued for the entire race, and produced some of the best hot rod racing of the night. Wright led up until the penultimate lap when Wilkes got underneath to go through to third. Ex World Champ Paffey had come through from the back of the grid to 7th, but the laps seemed to be running out for him. A smooth and untouchable Cooper cruised home to take the first 2 Litre Hot Rod Championship of 2010, followed by an unchallenged Crane in car 75, with Wilkes(110) in third and Wright(43) in fourth. McMenemy Takes Spoils at Nuttscorner Oval

Meeting three of the 2010 season at Nuttscorner Oval for the 2 Litre Hot Rods and once again it was a blue grade wash out from another excellent field of 25 rods. Former Irish Champion Glenn McDowell steered his Starlet to the heat one win, his first for a while, in what was a hectic race. Fluid had been dropped early on and saw several high profile spinners, before yellows were aired to calm the confusion. Following McDowell home were David McMenemy and European Champion Andy Best. Philip Beatty failed to start heat one, but made no mistake in heat two with a fine win from Leigh Nicholl and Wayne McClure’s pretty Saxo. McMenemy was the star turn in the final though, sweeping home to the silverware ahead of impressive novice grader Nigel McCauley in the ex-Jason Kew Corsa. John Murray was next up, with Gary Wilson the leading red top driver in fourth.

Fergal Fronts the Field at Nuttscorner Oval

Meeting two of the 2010 Ulster season for the 2 Litre Hot Rods saw the star graders fail to score a win for the second week in succession. Veteran campaigner Alvin Doak steered his Tigra to the win in the first heat ahead of Irish Champion Shane Murray and novice grader Nigel McCauley, before Shane's father John took the flag in heat two. The 2002 World Champion was chased over the line by Feargal McNally's Peugeot 205 and Philip Beatty's Nova, before McNally went one better when he lifted the LMC Trade Sales trophy in the final. The Murrays, Shane and John in that order, chased him over the line at the end of another very good session from the 25-car field.

Campbell takes NI Opener

There were 28 2 Litre Hot Rods for Nuttscorner Oval’s opening meeting of the season on Easter Monday afternoon. With such a crowded track it was always going to be difficult for the star graders, and indeed World Champion Wayne Woolsey, European Champion Andy Best and Irish Champion Shane Murray all struggled to make much headway during the afternoon, although Woolsey did card a distant third in heat two. Dungannon’s David McMenemy was the star turn in the heats, taking his ex-Andy Lane Corsa to a brace of wins. Denver McLean had a great run in his immaculate new machine to second from the reds in heat one, with former World Champion John Murray showing excellent pace to card runner-up spot in heat two. McMenemy was instantly upgraded to blue for the final, and despite his best efforts it was Vince Campbell who sped through to claim the flag, with McMenemy second and John Murray third. Overall it was an excellent meeting, which bodes well for the season ahead.

Smith Takes Arlington Opener

With upwards of twenty cars in action at the first Arlington meeting for the 2 Litre's this season, it was Daniel Smith who took the opening final win of the season. The heats were shared between Damon Wellman and Jason Busby

A cold wintery wimbledon brought a small turn out of 20 cars to the plough lane stadium on the 7th of February. Many new faces, and fresh looking cars braved the cold,wet weather for a good nights racing. All drivers were fighting for the same line and no one appeared to be getting anywhere fast. 146 and 87 battled it out for the last few laps but 146 just managed to hang on. Cooper Wins Winternationals

At Wimbledon on the 1st of January, Mark Cooper took a heat and final double to secure the 2010 Winternational title. After Micheal Pagden took the opening heat win to be the first winner in the class for 2010. Woolsey in Winter Wonderland

With the recent snow and ice thankfully having cleared in time to allow racing to go ahead, the Ulster 2 Litre Hot Rods contested their annual ‘off-season’ fixture at Nuttscorner Oval on Sunday December 27th. Even with the draw of World Qualifying points some chose to give it a miss, but there were still 18 cars present in the pits for the action. Clive Wilson headed the solitary heat from flag to flag from the yellow grade. Those behind were closing in towards the end, but Clive held on for the win from Philip Beatty and top star grader Davy Clarke, whilst former Irish Champion Glenn McDowell was more than glad to register fourth spot after a torrid season starting from the rear of the line up. When the green flag fell on the Cirrus Plastics-sponsored final, the whole star grade slithered off as one on the horrendously difficult track. Three abreast, sideways, on the kerbs and grass – it was all happening in the opening couple of laps!!! Wilson again held sway from the yellows, with this time Jonny McMillan, at the wheel of brother Ronnie’s car, was giving chase. All eyes were further back though, as World Champion Wayne Woolsey was on a mission from the reds, despite being in the unfamiliar Mark Madill Peugeot 205 for this meeting. He had mastered the conditions perfectly, and at 2/3rds distance swept past McMillan for the lead, having disposed of the rest at will using both lines. European Champion Andy Best was equally good value too, working his way through to an excellent second by the end, ahead of McMillan and Wilson.

All racing at a similar fast pace the top 3 battled it out for the first 7 laps. But Cooper seems to gain speed and started to build a gap between him and a chasing Wilks in second, and Wright in third. However Cooper picked his way through the back markers well and cruised home to take a well deserved victory, followed by Wilks and Wright. After 2 DNF in the heats Paffey started last car coming through to take a good 8th postion. A good final to end a good years racing! See you all in the new year. Lucy

Nuttscorner Oval 31/10/09

Despite the points finishing the previous week, numbers remained high in the 2 Litre Hot Rods, where Derek martin and Wayne McClure's splendid Saxo shared the heats. Martin was first across the line in the final, but was docked two places for earlier contact on Adam Hylands, leaving delighted veteran campaigner Davy Potter to record his first feature race win in many moons.
