Southern Championship Report 27/05/18

A good field of 19 hot rods turned up for the Southern Championship around the tight and torturous Aldershot circuit on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately the early morning thunderstorms had blown over leaving us with some nice sunshine, and a clear dry track ready for racing. For the first race a random Incarace draw was made with 58 former Lightning Rod racer Ben Murray in pole position. Along side him was the 184 car of Lee Munday. 146 Scott Morgan was up there again with third on the grid. 666 Graham Jackson, Damon Wellman number 8, and the defending champion 186 George Turiccki completing the top six starters. As the green flag dropped it was Murray who lead them away from Munday as Morgan went wide on the Aldershot turn allowing Wellman and a fast starting Turiccki through in into 3rd and 4th. George racing a new car for this weekend was absolutely flying out there as he then past Wellman for 3rd a couple of laps later. The local man 303 Gavin Botfield was up to six place and also flying, as Turiccki pulled a dummy move on the back-straight to pass Munday for second. In just a lap he was right on the tail of race leader Murray and tried to pull off the same manoeuvre, but was too far back as Murray held his ground. But Turiccki dug deep and made his move on the following lap to take the lead as Wellman retired on the pits bend. Behind the lead battle Botfield was able to find a way past Munday for third before setting about Murray. In the closing stages he was right on Ben’s tail and with just a lap and a half to go he made his move down on the Aldershot turn to take second place. So the defending champion 186 George Turiccki ran out the winner from Botfield and Murray, with Munday a good 4th and Morgan 5th.

With the reversed grid in place for race it was former Classic Hot Rod star Jamie Bowring on pole position in 313 with the world champion Gordon Alexander 71 all the way from Scotland in second, 228 Alan Thorndyke in third and 35 Mitchell Souter in forth. As the green flag flew the top 4 duly held positions with number 30 Martin Codling in 5th from 339 Ben Furness and 303 Gavin Botfield. After a slow start getting to grips with the track in race one, Alexander seemed to be in his groove and was really hounding Bowring for the lead as Souter made his move on Thorndyke for third. Further back 275 Brett Collison was taken out in an incident with 222 Ayrton Mills on the pits bend. Brett’s race was over where Mills was able to continue despite some heavy front end damage. Meanwhile Alexander was lining up his assault for the lead as Bowring went wide down on the pits bend. Gordon ceased the opportunity and took the lead. 186 George Turiccki's championship defence was dealt a blow as he was taken out down in an incident down on the Aldershot turn moments later. At this point 35 Mitchell Souter was also coming up close in third, and was now hounding Bowring for second as Codling got past Thorndyk for 4th with Botfield closing them down in 6th. Codling and Thorndyke were held up slightly by a back-marker allowing Botfield to close right up on the battle. A mistake from Thorndyke on the Aldershot turn and Botfield was through and into 5th straight away. Bowring’s car seemed a bit tail happy coming off the bends, and with 3 laps to go Souter tried his move on the back straight but didn’t quite make it. Botfield was closing on them all the time setting a blistering pace. On the next lap Bowing slipped wide again and this time Souter got along side. They were door handle to door handle through the Aldershot turn but Souter was through. Botfield snatched the opportunity and followed him through into third as they started the last lap. So after his warm-up in race one, Gordon Alexander went on to win with Souter second and Botfield in third.

Gavin’s consistency gave him pole position for the Southern Championship with Alexander alongside him. On row two Ben Murray was third in 58 with 35 Souter 4th, with the defending champion George Turiccki back in 11th after his earlier problems in race 2. An equal start from the front two runners saw Botfield & Alexander racing door handle to door handle through the pits bend and down the back-straight putting Gordon in an awkward position. They banged wheels on the Aldershot turn, knocking Alexander out wide and allowing Murray through into second as they started lap two. Alexander tried to come back but Murray was in no mood to give way. Codling had moved up to 4th place with Souter 5th and Furness 6th. Despite his lack of experience as a 2 Litre Hot Rod driver Murray was setting a very strong in the 58 car, and was really giving Botfield a hard time. But all the time Gavin stayed cool, as the top three begun to pull clear of the rest of the field. Number 30 Martin Codling was having an intense battle with Souter, Furness and Bowring with Turiccki moving up the order to 8th at this stage. At the back of the field 222 Mills had a coming together with Mark Constable in car 38 taking them both out into the fence and eliminating both from the race. At the front Botfield was still leading with Murray still shadowing his every move in second place. Alexander was still in touch but not really able to make an impression on the front runners. Then 313 Jamie Bowring had a massive spin down on the Aldershot turn clipping Jackson in the process, fortunately he was able to continue. In the closing stages Murray was right on Botfield’s bumper and challenging for the lead. But Botfield was not about to be moved and duly held on to win the Southern Championship with Murray finishing in an excellent second place with the world champion Alexander in third. 339 Ben Furness another lightning Rod racer was 4th with the out going champion George Turiccki moving up to 5th after Codling and Souter were each docked two places for contact during the race. So overall another great days racing, well done to Gavin Botfield the new Southern champion! 58 Ben Murray though was the real stand-out in second place after a cracking drive and setting the fastest lap of the race! Definitely one to watch for the future!
Thanks to Tom for the report.

Aldershot Report 01/04/2018

Around 16 Hot Rods took to the Aldershot circuit on Easter Sunday. Despite the lack of numbers due to a clash with Birmingham on Saturday night, the racing really lived up to it's reputation. The first race started with returning drivers Mark Constable 38 and 184 Lee Munday duking it out for the lead with Munday eventually getting the upper hand on lap 2. Behind them 24 Stuart Sculthorpe was leading the yellow grades with number 9 Paul Woodbridge just behind. Having won the two heat races on gala night, 146 Scott Morgan was flying through the field passing cars hand over fist. He was up to 5th before a miss timed move on Woodbridge sent the number 9 car into the armco on the pits bend. Morgan carried on without loosing too much time. Sculthorpe then got past Constable to take second place with Morgan following through. Scott looked like a man on a mission out there! A slight mistake in Sculthorpe's defence allowed Morgan through into second. Behind them the race was heating up with 745 Dan Bennett in his new Peugeot overtaking 328 Michael Mills for 4th place with 303 Gavin Botfield also charging up from the back. In the closing stages Morgan had caught Munday and was challenging for the lead. It was a real close battle but Munday showed no signs of rustiness as he kept Morgan at bay to take the win. Morgan was second with Sculthorpe a good third place just ahead of Bennett and Botfield.

Munday struggled off the line at the start of race two allowing 38 Mark Constable to take an early lead. It would only last a handful of laps before the impressive looking Sculthorpe came through to take it up on lap 5. Morgan was also looking rapid as he came through to take second place on the following lap. Bennett was up to 4th being chased by his old car now in the hands of 228 Alan Thorndyke. 303 Gavin Botfield was also having another good race, charging through from the back up to 5th place as the lead pair were now running nose to tail! Despite coming under intense pressure from Morgan, Sculthorpe held his ground and was looking good, but with just a quarter of the race to go his right front suspension collapsed forcing him to drop out of the competition. A disappointing end to a promising track debut. 146 Scott Morgan thus inherited the lead and went on to win followed home by Dan Bennett, Gavin Botfield and Alan Thorndyke. Meanwhile last year's Hoosier tyre series winner 186 George Turiccki could only manage 6th this time round!

Morgan was on pole for the final having scored the most points during the heat races with Bennett alongside him. Botfield started third with Munday, Thorndyke and Turiccki behind. At the start Morgan got a blistering getaway as did Turiccki. Botfield tapped the rear of Bennett as they came through the pits bend causing some major congestion. There were three abreast down the back straight with Turiccki trying to go round the outside of both Botfield and Bennett but it didn't work as Botfield won out the battle for second place with Thorndyke moving through into third. Miraculously they all survived with Bennett being the biggest loser in all the congestion dropping back to 5th! This effectively gave Morgan ahead start but Botfield wasn't about to let him out of his sights for long! His car was setting a hot pace as he caught the 146 car at half distance. The two of them had a great ding dong battle with Botfield trying to get the undercut on a number of occasions. Eventually the pressure took it told on Morgan. A mistake just after lapping Constable and Botfield made his move to take the lead as they came through the pits bend. Morgan seemed to be in trouble with tyres as Thorndyke was now closing him down in 3rd, with Bennett back up to 4th after his earlier delay at the start. But by that point too much time had been lost. Botfield went on to win as Morgan duly held on to his second position with Thorndyke in third and Bennett in 4th. In all a great days racing with very few penalties. Well done to all the drivers who took part!
Thanks to Tom for the excellent report as always.

Aldershot Preview 01/04/2018

Round 2 of the 2 Litre Hot Rods Hoosier tyre series takes place at Aldershot on Easter Sunday 1st April. Last week up at Ipswich saw a really interesting start to the new campaign. We had at least six new drivers to the class this year, two if which were victorious in the heats, including number 9 Paul Woodbridge and 811 Graeme Parrot a former hot rod racer from Standlake. Number 2 Ryan Morgan was the winner of the final with regular front runners George Turiccki 186 and 43 Paul Wright in 2nd and 3rd. Two other new entries include two former Lightning Rod racers, 58 Ben Murry who's raced in the 2 litres once before, and Ben Furness in 339. Thus we also have some drivers returning to the class in the shape of Lee Munday 184, Mark Constable in car 38 and 24 Stuart Sculthorpe who once raced Lightning Rods in the past. So with some interesting new talent for this season it's going to be very interesting to see how the pecking order shapes up in 2018!
